The Old Death Road (North Yungas Road)

This unpaved section is the core of your 64-kilometer mountain bike descent.

After the initial asphalt stretch, you reach the actual dirt track. This is the historic route originally carved into the cliffs in the 1930s by Paraguayan prisoners of war.

Vehicle traffic dropped by over 90% when a parallel highway opened in 2006. Today, you share this narrow track primarily with other cyclists. You must follow the local rule and ride on the left side of the track near the edge.

The Cliffside Switchbacks

2-3 hoursStrictly ride on the left

This narrow, unpaved section clings to the mountainside with sheer drops up to 600 meters (2,000 ft) into the canyon below. You will spend most of your descent navigating these gravel corners. Stay strictly on the left side of the road, despite the drop. Keep a safe distance from other riders on the descent.
